It’s beginning to feel a tiny bit like spring in London, the tech governance world is in its regular state of chaotic activity (Elon is suing Sam Altman? There’s 1000 more working groups on AI?) and it’s time for another CIP update. We know it’s early for Q1, but we have so much to share we just couldn’t wait. Firstly, we’re launching our Roadmap to Democratic AI this month, look out for it! We’re big believers in imagining a positive, democratic vision for artificial intelligence. We’re also big believers in practically doing something about it. This roadmap is our take on what the ecosystem can do, build, research, advocate for, and fund in 2024 to get there. It’s the product of many, many conversations, whiteboarding sessions, and pilot experiments. We’ll be sharing it with partners, some fantastic speakers, and all of you at an in-person event in London and a webinar on March 25th. Register here! In Alignment Assembly news, we’re thrilled that Anthropic’s new Claude 3’s constitution was updated based on our Collective Constitutional AI project with them—this is (we believe) the first ever instance of public input directly shaping the behavior of a frontier model! We’re glad to see AAs being taken up by organizations like OpenFuture EU and Creative Commons to determine how commons-based governance will work in the age of AI. In partnership with Taiwan’s Ministry of Digital Affairs, we’re also running a Taiwan-wide AA on information integrity, with results incoming. We’re also excited about our ongoing work with the UK AI Safety Institute, as their leading partner on frontier AI and elections, as well as on broader societal impact evaluations. Finally, our co-founder and Executive Director Divya Siddarth gave a TED talk, and it’s now live (tweet thread here!). In a year of panic on AI, democracy, and much in-between, it’s about how we can build futures that are good, actually — if we start experimenting and investing now.
